I took my try at a food court the other weekend along with a friend who had heard of "Sipote." Does the name sound familiar? Perhaps the name rings close to the beloved Chipotle of the U.S.?
Not only are these two food chains' names similar but the whole concept is, too. On the picture of the menu above you can see Chipotle's equivalent step-by-step ordering process on Sipote's menu save the translation into Spanish. It's all the same down to the extra charge for guacamole. C'mon Colombia - avocados are a whole lot cheaper here.
After chowing down, though the taste of my burrito wasn't quite as delicious as Chipotle's, I thought there absolutely had to be some affiliation between Chipotle and Sipote. No way would Chipotle owner Steve Ells allow for Sipote to exist without his legal consent.

So Mr. Ells, in true American style, I think you should sue Sipotle, take over, and improve the wanna-be taste of Sipote's burritos.
This might not be the only case in which I've seen this happening, there are many people that try to be a smart ass and copy someone else idea, you see, Colombians usually praise what comes from another countries, and I feel sorry for those people but I love my country, I bet you Liked it too, have a nice day

To their defense, "Sipote" is a slang word from the colombian coasts that means "Huge".
ReplyDeleteBut i agree with you; there has been many cases of people bragging to be very innovative when they're actually copying and slightly tweaking some other's ideas from outside. I wouldn't be surprised, but rather annoyed by the trend.
for sure Chipotle was first. I'm Colombian and I say sue them. I'm tired of all the photocopiers in my country. Sue them, make them change their logo, name, corporate image. Force them to be original and think for a change. Now as far as the serving pipeline and the guacamole stuff that you can't lay claim to. It's like trying to copyright buffet.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame. I'm Colombian and I'm really sick of people who take advantage of someone else's ideas, they are the ones who are guilty of the low reputation that we get known for around the world.
DeleteI have to shay that in this global world is hardly possible, trully impossible to find something original this days. I work as an advertiser and brand graphic designer, and i find all over the web, examples of similar to identical logos, companies, concepts, colors. So, maybe the people of Sipote trully had the idea, because the concept was really unique at the moment IN COLOMBIA, maybe in another country existed something like that but C´mon, try to drop a trully orinigal, profitable and realistic idea and i can asure u that there will something like that somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteIC-Sleepy you are a Global Sleepy!!!
ReplyDeleteHello.
ReplyDeleteIt is necesary clear some things:
SIPOTE has nothing to do with CHIPOTLE.
1. "Sipote" es a colombian word for huge
2. Chipotle is a kind of mexican pepper, is not only the name of a brand... so is comun use that name for mexican food restaurants. (maybe the mexicans has to sue Mr. Ells for stole their name (hihi kidding).
3. That concept of attention is very comun in fast-food stores.
Realmente la palabra es "Cipote" y es el branding que le damos a las marcas cuando se toman tan genéricas. No es copia realmente.
ReplyDeleteIn the other hand Mr. Blogger, why don't you criticize "burger king" against "mcdonalds"? It's the same thing, both are crap and both american. Now who's less creative?
Infórmese antes de hablar... just a suggestion!!
Y Jean eye (no se que shit) la baja reputación está empezando por vos.
Slds.
please guy look at this first http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7-DlOaCsjU
ReplyDeleteThank you very much "No Logo", excelent material.
DeleteIt's NOT a Remix. A remix is when you change something to make it your own. Sipote is obviously a copy of Chipotle. Both delicious.
ReplyDeleteSipote has anything to do with chipotle. Chipotle, its a spice mexican souce. Sipote in Colombia Means , huge thing stuff with everything. the term is more use in the region of the colombian cost line but its well known in all Colombia
ReplyDeleteSo by starting Chipotle for the name of a Brand its the exact copy of a mexican concept word. Sipote its other completely different thing. There are lots of words that rime or sound close but thaht doesnt mean ist a copy of each other or that it cant have a differente meaning.
ReplyDeleteI'm Colombia and I agree Sipote its a copy of Chipotle. I actually tried Sipote first and years later went to US and for a moment I though they were the same Business. I know its a copy because there is not a single original feature that Sipote has compared to Chipotle, but Come on guys! this is not the first and wont be last case where such a thing is seen. The fact that Sipote is Colombian has nothing to do with copy rights, or what can you say about Mcdonals and Burger king? Pepsy and Coke? or even Chipotle itself, Steven Ells took chipotle's ideas from the Mexican restaurant he uses to go.
